And as of May 1, 2026, SportsEngine is owned by PlayMetrics — its third change of hands in under a decade. The roadmap, the pricing, and the support are about to change. Here's what's already different.
We're not going to tell you SportsEngine is bad software. It runs a lot of programs. But it was built for high schools with a paid athletic director and a software budget line — not the homeschool, club, or community programs we serve — and on May 1, 2026 it was acquired by PlayMetrics, the same private-equity-backed platform you'll see compared on /vs-playmetrics.
That makes SportsEngine and PlayMetrics the same company now, both inside a Genstar Capital roll-up that exists to be sold again. Pricing reviews and roadmap quiet-periods are the usual playbook after deals like this.
Team Scout is the opposite on each of those points: our pricing is on the website, our payment processing runs at cost with no hidden checkout fee, and we're founder-owned with no investor exit clock. This page is the honest side-by-side.
The ownership question
SportsEngine is now part of a private-equity roll-up.
On May 1, 2026, PlayMetrics — backed by Genstar Capital — closed its acquisition of SportsEngine. It is SportsEngine's third change of ownership in under a decade. Acquisitions like this tend to mean pricing reviews and a quiet period where the roadmap stops being public. Team Scout is founder-owned and isn't for sale.

The bigger lever — how the fee gets presented
Other platforms have the same theoretical option to pass the credit-card fee to parents — but the way it's presented at checkout decides whether parents actually do. Team Scout's checkout positions the fee-cover opt-in as the default, with the math made plain. The result: 90%+ of parents choose to cover the credit-card fee, and every dollar of the program's collection lands with the program. On a year of registrations, that single design choice can outweigh the entire processing-rate gap above.
Let's be straight about this. Team Scout isn't the cheapest option, and we won't pretend to be — our Premium tier costs more per month than a small program's SportsEngine subscription. What we are is the transparent option: payment processing passed through at cost, no markup, no surprise checkout fee, and a price you can read on a web page. Most programs don't switch to save a few dollars. They switch because they're tired of not knowing what they're paying.

Honestly, you might not — at least not just because another platform is nicer. A fair question. Three things: we're founder-owned and bootstrapped, so there's no investor exit clock forcing a sale; your data exports to CSV at any time, on every tier, no questions asked; and every other major platform in this category has been sold to private equity in the last decade. The "safe" choice may be the riskier one.

Same worry we've heard from every program — half the coaches on our first migrated team were over 50. The trick is the onboarding, not the app. We do a one-hour walkthrough during migration and send each coach a three-minute video on the one thing they need: posting to their team feed.
